The aerospace industry is, along with the high-tech and biotech sectors, one of the leading growth industries in the globally networked world. Economic experts have been predicting for years that, despite events like the Gulf War or the attacks of 11 September 2001, there will be long-term growth until 2030. With the increase of traffic, the existing Berlin airport system of Schoenefeld and Tegel will not be able to handle capacity much longer. Work has been ongoing since autumn 2006 to expand Schoenefeld Airport into Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which will replace the outdated airport system of Schoenefeld, Tegel and Tempelhof. The future Berlin Brandenburg Airport will provide the Berlin-Brandenburg region with much needed air traffic capacity for the next decade. The region will profit from new companies setting up here and from new jobs.
