Berlin Airports: the job machine
Berlin Airports is one of the leading employers in Berlin and Brandenburg. Today, 17,785 employees work at Berlin Airports. Around two new jobs a day have thus been created (2.25 new jobs) since the last Workplace Survey (01.04.2006).
Besides direct employees of Berlin Airports, the entire region of Berlin and Brandenburg profits from the dynamic development of Berlin Airports during the construction of BER. The study “Economic Effects of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI)”, carried out by Prof. Herbert Baum of the Institute of Transport Economics at the University of Cologne in 2005, has been updated to correspond with the current Workplace Survey 2009 and shows that Berlin Airports and the construction of Berlin Brandenburg Airport represent a key economic factor for the region.
According to the 2005 survey, the total employment effect of Berlin Airports was around 33,600 jobs. The latest survey shows that the total employment effect of Berlin Airports in 2009 is already 40,400 jobs. This represents an increase of 6,800 jobs since 01.04.2004.
The labour market effects of BER were investigated in the study “Economic Effects of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI)”, carried out by Prof. Herbert Baum of the Institute of Transport Economics at the University of Cologne.
