Berlin-Schoenefeld: best freight airport in 2006

International airlines voted Berlin Schoenefeld Airport the best freight airport in 2006. The prize awarded by the international trade journal, Aircargo News, was presented in recognition of the competitive prices, the freight service and Schoenefeld’s customer orientation.

On receiving the prestigious airline award at a gala event, attended by 500 freight experts, in the Royal Lancaster Hotel London on 22 April 2006, Dieter Johannsen-Roth, spokesman for the Executive Board of Berlin Airports, stressed that the go-ahead for the development of Berlin Brandenburg Airport would significantly improve Schoenefeld’s potential for air freight traffic.

Berlin’s geographic location makes it an ideal trans-shipment station for east-west transport, as around one hour’s flying time can be saved in the direction of Eastern Europe/China in comparison with the extremely busy hubs in Western Europe. With its attractive all-in price packages for freight charters, Schoenefeld Airport is a regular stop for AN-124 high-capacity cargo aircraft. In April 2006, the airport even witnessed the unloading of such spectacular freight as the statues for the “Egypt’s Sunken Treasures” exhibition from the world’s highest capacity cargo aircraft, the Airbus A300-600ST “Beluga”.
